True, but a random stick you find on the ground won't necessarily be great protection. Most likely it'll just snap the first time you try to defend yourself or attack someone. Staffs that are for fighting are usually hardwood (or perhaps bamboo), tough enough to stand up to repeated impact. Otherwise they're useless.
