Depends on the fandom. There are a few G-rated shipfics in my fandom (cuddling and the like), but the vast majority are heavy-duty smut. That could be the case in the OP's fandom. (Speaking as someone who has had more than their fill of smutfic and would tear off her arm for some lovely plotty genfic, I feel for them.)
