Me too, OP. Me too.

How old is that advert, OP?

While I haven't given up in hoping to see more black/brown/etc people in the media, and I tend to write OCs in my fic that are of color, you gotta do you and enjoy what you're consuming.

(I realize you may be speaking about a whole spectrum of issues regarding race in fandom & media, and I'm only addressing a fairly surface issue)

I think it's from the 80s so no worries. If it weren't for the stupid demon horns, this would be adorable.

Hell, it IS adorable. Just marred by someone's stupidity masked as cleverness.

DC's viral advertising for Batman vs Superman is just getting dumber.

Holy crap. The blond kid looks like the horror version of Shirley temple that will kill you in your sleep, the black kid looks like a 100-year-old soul-sucking vampire.

TBH, I think so much many discussions about race are...well, I don't know how to put it, but they start off with the wrong premise to begin with? Like, say, recent wank over not casting an Asian guy for Iron Fist (who is canonically white), instead of actually being invested in new characters or bringing characters that already exist to the forefront.

But I digress.

Ultimately, in fiction, I want to watch or read a good story with interesting characters...not something that scores diversity points. (To clarify, diversity is good, but I'm not going to watch a shitty show because it's diverse, or vice versa).

The black kid looks pretty normal & cute to me. The white kid is...well, not abnormal.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-06 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Those kids look like they just crawled out of Satan's womb. The one on the right even appears to have horns...

(Anonymous) 2016-03-06 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
The horns are on purpose, by the ad-makers... little white angel, little black devil.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-06 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
DA I think the angel is as creepy as the devil intentionally. At least that's how I read it.

If you get sucked into the tumblr SL maelstrom it's easy to feel like you're sick of that shit. I've been spending a lot of time on Reddit lately, though, and it's the exact opposite there - really, really hostile and bigoted in a way that makes it feel way more important to talk about these things.

I guess what I'm saying is that it's about the crowd you're in. I like F!S because it'd populated by fairly liberal people who are mature enough to not go overboard/be overenthusiastic in the way that tumblr often does.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-06 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a good point. It's easy to lose sight of the actual issues when everything around you is more like the Salem witch hunts.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-07 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Same. I use reddit and tumblr both roughly equally. And even though on reddit I only subscribe and go onto a handful of subs, I still see a fair share of really gross and blatant racism and sexism. Post an article about BLM or feminism and the comment section will be a giant shitshow in less then a minute, ugh.

I mean say what you will about tumblr and F!S but at least they actually care about these issues. (for the most part anyway)

I can't unsee the black kid as Astroboy.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-07 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
omg that IS so fuckin' creepy!

(Anonymous) 2016-03-07 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Didn't think it was a great photo, but didn't think it was too creepy. Thought Anne Geddes did a better job with her Zac and Georgina photos. Sorry for a black and white link. She did do color photos of them but I googled and couldn't find a good quality version of them. So it'll have to be black and white:http://fineartamerica.com/featured/zac-and-georgina-anne-geddes.html

I do think an aunt of mine said that she felt the photos of Zac and Georgina were creepy, but I didn't see the creepiness. About the only reason to consider them creepy is if you're a perv who can't see photos of children shirtless from the waist up without sexualizing them.

Woah, blast from the past. Aren't those ads from the late 90's or something? I haven't seen them in a long long time.
