Well as long as you learned your lesson...

I always think back to the parable of the knitting club here:
Because really, why would they write the rest if people are already so rude about it? If you were part of a knitting group and you’d knitted half of a long scarf and you heard the rest of your knitting group gossiping snidely to one another about how the second half would probably be terrible even IF you even managed to finish it, would you go back to that knitting group week after week, or would you consider leaving it and hanging out with people who aren’t such jerks?

But I also think your writer didn't like the canon enough and it's definitely not all (or even mostly) your fault. I get a couple flames on my work, and some of them are pretty clear they've read the work (whereas others are just copypastas) and while it doesn't make me happy, I never consider quitting over their responses.*

*Flames = hating you for writing a ship, a kink, a situation... anytime someone goes into a fic with the line "this should never be written about, ever", I'd consider that a flame

Oh I definitely learned my lesson. I wish there was a meaningful way for me to apologise to them.

Sorry to hear you've been flamed. :( I'm glad it didn't deter you.

Don't beat yourself up over it. From what you've been saying, it sounds like they're a young fic writer. The call of words is too strong to resist. :)

I've met old faces under new names in fandom, so maybe you'll meet again! C'mon the internet is a strange and mysterious place, anything is possible. I definitely understand your frustration with AU settings (my own fandom has similar issues) but... not much is going to change if no one is writing other sorts of fic (but you could always write some! be the change and all!).

Looking upthread, it could be a lot worse. I've seen screenshots from tumblr of people congratulating themselves of getting an author/artist to stop posting. That's just sad.

That's horrible. What a lousy way to treat people.
