SA - I also wonder if some of it... a lot of them tend to be teenage girls, and there's a whole pile of crap about women liking fandom for The Wrong Reasons. Like all the "Oh good, the 12th Doctor's old so now all the stupid girls who are just in it for the hawt sexy Doctor will stop being fake fans." and so there's this kneejerk "I am not like THE OTHER GIRLS! I like the show for pure intellectual reasons! Not gross dirty sex reasons! I'm a Real Fan!"

Fuck that. You can like a show and find the characters hot, it's not an 'or' situation.

I also think some of the teens who are demisexual today are the same as the ones who would be "I'm bi, but I only date guys" ten years ago. There's no reason to give them any shit about it, it's not really hurting anything.

This is spot on. I do think a lot of it is internalized misogyny, but with a feminist dressing. Like "I'm not like those problematic girls! I am not attracted to this actor like those other fangirls! Not dirty sex in MY fics". Which isn't new, sadly, people have been doing that forever. But couple that with the fact that the culture they grew up in has a lot of conservative Catholic views of sexuality, and they just perpetuate it.

It's not Catholic views of sexuality.

It's far, far closer to the "purity culture" found in Evangelical Fundamentalist Christianity, which is basically, the second women lose their virginity (whether willingly or -- and this is the most horrifying -- UNwillingly), women become "used goods."

Even impure thots make you dirty-bad-wrong.

Believe me. I know some escapees from this culture and they make mainstream Catholic teaching on sexuality look like a how-to guide for Saturday Night at the Orgies.

The problem is that, in the U.S. at least, certain geographic locations are just so doused in purity culture that even if you are not a Fundy it's so part of your local gestalt you can't hope to avoid it.

Um...can't even imagine how they'd see me then. I kind of liked the 12th doctor. He was much sexier than Matt Smith or David Tennant for me. I mean, they were cute, but I like the accent and the gray-black hair contrasting with how...young? he acts.
