Details?

Honestly if it is what I first read it as, her declaring "my child is going to be this gender because I say so" that would leave me really feeling awful for the child.

I think they did IVF and they decided to implant female embryos first (though she has stressed that it was 'first' and that they fully planned to try for another child later using some of the male embryos).

I...thought all embryos were female until much later in development than IVF allows for?

I reaaaaally have no idea how IVF works, to be honest. This is only what I've read through the internet that is causing this 'controversy'.

It is a procedure called pre-implantation genetic diagnosis. They grow the embryo on in the lab for a couple of days until there is a nice little clump of cells formed, still too early to even call a fetus, yoink out a couple of cells (don't worry, the clump of cells doesn't miss them) and examine the chromosomes to see if it is XY or XX, and if you get the wrong result then the bunch of cells either goes into the freezer or the trash depending on what storage plan you are on. It also screens for a bunch of chromosomal defects too, this causes some controversy amongst the Pro-Deaf community, Downs Groups, and various other genetic disorder support communities.

If you spotted that it only diagnoses genetic sex and not any of the other myriad indicators of gender; well then you aren't the first to spot that. It is all well trodden ground.

.....I would totally do that to make sure I didn't a get akid that may need way too much extra care.

I'm sorry for saying that, but I'm a very impatient person and I just would NT have the mind set to take care a very special needs child. Asperger's is one thing, anything too handicapped would just...no.

That and I'm terrible with money, so having the funds available would be really hard for me.

I'd rather just start from scratch if I did find those defects and the like.

harsh but yeah I agree with most of this

Her and her husband are having to use IVF to get pregnant. Since that comes with a bunch of chromosomal screenings anyway, to try and get a viable embryo, they decided they might as well just shoot for a daughter since that was their first preference as far as gender of their child goes. It isn't that shocking, even when conception happens the old fashioned way most folks say they have a clear preference. If you are already having to screen then might as well just go for it.
