I knew people who not only wanted sons, they refused to accept the possibility that they might have a daughter. When they were asked what names they'd picked out for the baby (or something else along those lines), they only gave boys names, and when people of course asked "What if it's a girl?" they'd say "Oh, it won't be!" One especially worrying one said "It better not be."

All in the US.

NAYRT - My parents had only picked out boy names because they'd been told 'for sure' that I was going to be a boy. XD

The people I'm talking about hadn't gotten tests to check, though. One wasn't even pregnant yet.

Hahaha... seriously? There are lots of people who still value boys over girls. To ~carry on the family name~ among other things.

And I've known couples who want girls, not boys, because they are ~easier~. So I guess we even out.

I have a coworker who struggled with severe fertility problems for years before finally getting pregnant and since she and her husband are fairly sure that this could be their only pregnancy, they've both admitted that they hope that they're having a boy because "it's [their] only shot." The husband in particular is concerned with having a male child to carry on the family name (even though it's not like a girl couldn't do this) and his parents are pretty open about how much they want a grandson. I'm honestly surprised that you're surprised about things like this. I've seen this kind of attitude more than once

lol, it actually existed among modern Greeks when my mom and her brothers were getting married. One of my uncles married a woman my yiayia didn't approve of, and she told him "I hope you have five, and all of them girls" like it was the worst possible curse a mother could pronounce.

Of course, finding dowries for 5 girls would have been economic ruin for a peasant back in the old country, so there was a practical reason 5 daughters would be very bad.

Incidentally, my uncle had four daughters. Never tried for a 5th kid.
