Usually, when someone asks "Do Americans really ____?" the answer is it depends on the individual. I know some households where everyone has to take off their shoes and others where there's no rule about it. My house didn't have a rule and we were really healthy though, so your perception is probably wrong.

I think it's regional, actually. Where I'm from absolutely everyone takes off shoes inside, except for people with otherwise very messy houses or gross student/bachelor houses (and even then, the expectation would be that people offer to take off their shoes before walking into someone's house).

This. The U.S. is a huge country, why would anyone think that every single person in it does anything the exact same way?
