Re: Do Americans really not take off their shoes in the house?

I didn't growing up, and at my parents' house, shoes stay on feet if you're in a main living area. Boots, totally different story.

Now that I have my own place, shoes stay on until I reach carpet, then I have a nice plastic mat I kick them off on and put on home shoes/slippers (ie. footwear I never wear outside the building). My Mom likes to tease me I picked it up from being so inundated by Japanese culture for most of my life. :p Trust me, if the concept of guest slippers wasn't considered totally gross here in my part of the US, I'd set things up properly.

I also have a boot tray in the kitchen. If it's wet/snowy/muddy, footwear goes in the boot tray. The front door opens right into my kitchen with a tile floor, and that's much easier to clean than a carpet for me.
