God, there were really creepy Snarry fics everywhere for a while. Like, there were multiple fics based on the premise of Snape kidnapping/rescuing Harry from the Dursleys when he was anywhere between the ages of 3 and 11 that ended in them fucking sometime during seventh year. Those fics also were big on the Trio hate and the Weasley hate. Hermione or Mrs. Weasley occasionally cottoned on to what was going on and called Wizard Child Protective Services, and were portrayed as evil, jealous hags for doing so.

Really, the biggest problem I've always had with Snarry or Snermione isn't the age factor. I mean, I've pushed myself through generation-crossing ship fics before. I'd have such, such fewer problems with Snarry or Snermione if they didn't consistently pit the chosen avatar against his/her canon closest friends and paint it as a good thing that Hermione/Harry can only really count on Snape omg, because that plus the age factor hits my every ohgodno nerve. Especially when it happens while Harry or Hermione are still in their teens.

This trope still exists even today, in current Snarry fic being written.

Ugh, yeah and this is one of the tropes that usually escalates the Dursleys' abuse up to "war crimes" levels, just to make sure that Harry is extra dependent and grateful towards Sev. But HP fandom in general is less in your face than it used to be, so it's pretty easy to avoid any part you want. In ye olde days, especially in places where the tagging wasn't so hot, it was easy to accidentally fall into a pile of grooming squick.
