As you can see by the responses here, it depends. Some places people do, some it not something people do. In some places people have a "mud room" - a place where they keep their muddy boots/ winter clothes - what not. For people who live in warmer areas, (where we don't get lots of snow/mud) it is not as much of a big deal.

Myself? While in my own house I do both. Most of the time I am in socks at least (my feet get cold) but only on the main level which is hardwood for the most part. I rarely where shoes when I go to my bedroom where the carpet is.
