The object is not being sucked (pulled), it is being pushed by the air coming in behind it

If this is true, then why does the open end of a vacuum cleaner hose suck your hand flat against it? The air cannot be getting around your hand and pushing it, because your hand is flat against the hose and blocking its end.

I'm not an expert on vacuum cleaners, and for the most part you may be right. But I think I'd bet against you on this one.
