Yeah, I'm not dated back to the era of Kirk/Spock, but I WAS in some of the first mailing-list clubs. Early AOL era, Usenet years. 'Estrogen Brigades.' The fandom wank of now isn't a new thing, it never was.

Shit.

People still do research about what happened in the fandom aftermath of The Sorrows of Young Werther.

Yeah, I was on a few MLs and one or two oekaki boards before I got linked to LJ. It literally changed the scope of fandom forever. Before that there was no good way to advertise or be able to talk to a lot of people without opting in to a whole bunch of stuff you might not want to opt into.

Once LJ got off the ground, fandom, merchandising, and fan culture exploded in a five year period.

It's not to say it was a new thing, but the back then it was so underground it was hard to find out about. Now you just have to turn your head and a Hot Topic exists.
