Universities should not ban speakers on an ideological basis.

Including private universities?

Nah.

Racists, misogynists, and homophobes are not entitled to a platform.

so the leader of the KKK should be allowed to come and speak?

Not only if he's invited but just if he, you know, wants to show up in a classroom or something and give a talk, he should be allowed to do that, according to OP

doesn't make any sense but hey

What if the professor doesn't want him there? Are they allowed to make those distinctions about an individual?

If the professor actively invites/allows/encourages KKK members to speak in class, is the university justified in penalizing them?

By extension: is the government justified in actively promoting a certain ideological view by choosing who speaks at public universities? I sort of want to say yes, myself, but it's more complicated than that - it reflects on the career of a university president IMO if they allow someone with hateful views to talk.

what do you mean by speakers? Like, keynote, official speech-giving speakers, or people who just show up on campus?

Cause a lot of public universities do have public "free speech zones", which is why I semi regularly when going to class have to walk by a fire and brimstone preacher saying all the sinners, like homosexuals, jews and gangster rappers, are going to hell. And I go to a liberal arts school. (Actually that might be why it happens.)

As for Speaker speakers, that is up to the University's complete discretion.

Ah, I remember the angry preachers from when I was in college. This guy wouldn't shake anyone's hand* because he didn't want to touch the hand of someone who masturbated, and if anyone claimed they didn't he said they were lying. He was such a piece of work. I have to wonder if he was just trolling IRL.

*not that most people wanted to, but a few offered just to make a point

It was sort of like watching a circus. People gathered around to watch the shitshow.

No, I think no platforming someone who is ideologically incorrect is a necessary step, particularly in an environment where young minds are being shaped.

Because young minds should be shaped in an echochamber of Right Think.

Yeah. No. Universities are not indoctrination camps.

Re: Unpopular or controversial opinions

This is a stupid argument to make because I guarantee you there are an infinity of belief systems that you don't think students need to be exposed to. Is it indoctrination to prefer Darwinian evolution to Lamarckian, or to have a university that asserts that magic does not in point of fact work? So please stop making these wild claims and try to be specific about what bothers you, and what specific kinds of speech you feel are unfairly under-represented, and why it's an issue, and where the line ought to be drawn for who does or does not receive university resources to promote their views.
