eBay!

(Anonymous) 2016-03-10 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
I have a bunch of stuff laying around that I should get rid of, mostly sterling silver jewelry, and am thinking of trying eBay. Has anyone sold on eBay? Is it easy to do? Not worth the time? Any advice at all? Thanks!

It really depends on what you're selling. Unless it's very unusual or vintage, you'll be competing with hundreds of sellers from China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, etc. selling costume jewelry for dirt cheap.

Only things I've sold on eBay are textbooks which was a pretty easy process for me but idk about jewelry. My mom has sold jewelry on eBay though, I think...I'd imagine it's much the same process as selling books, but I don't know what the market's like.

I have an eBay store and I usually make anywhere from around $100-250 a month with it. I will warn you that jewelry is a highly saturated category and not one that I would recommend someone start out selling in - everybody and their mother thinks that they'll be able to make a ton of money selling their old jewelry on eBay and that just isn't true.

You can certainly try, but I don't know how much luck you would have.

Thanks for your input!

You're welcome! A large part of the problem is that, as one of the above posters noted, there are a million listings for cheap costume jewelry from Chinese sellers. There's definitely a market for real jewelry; the problem is just getting it seen.

Also, from what I've heard, jewelry is a category that tends to have a higher than normal percentage of scamming buyers. I can't attest to this personally as I haven't sold any jewelry myself (I tend to sell collectibles, vintage electronics, and toys), but that's another thing to keep in mind.

It's fairly streamlined. Just make sure you add a tracking number and put in a good description. Keep your sales organized and you should be fine.
