Spoilers needed: The Magicians

(Anonymous) 2016-03-10 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
So I do not like downer endings. I can take a bit of depression but I need it to come good in the end. Even most bittersweet endings depress the hell out of me. That in mind, would you say "The Magician's" book series would be acceptable to me?

So I know Alice dies, but I understand she may come back? Does she and Quentin get back together, and stay together in the end? What about other character death? This may be a little sexist, but male character death does not bother me (Other than the protagonist. I don't tend to develop empathy with side male characters like I do with side female characters), so I'm looking to get warned for the following?

1. Main Protag death?
2. Named / developed female Character death?
3. Animal Death?
4. End of happy "Alpha Couple" relationships?
5. An ending where any of the main characters (Other than the villain) are more miserable than when the book started.

Quentin is awful. This book series is awful. There's nothing to see here.

I agree, but OP might be an MRA so the book will be fine for him/her.

If rape and misogyny doesn't bother you but animal death does the congratulations you're a shitty human being and you have found the book series for you.

...Or possibly they don't see "fantasy series" and jump immediately to "RAPE". What the fuck is wrong with you?

Honestly, no. The book wasn't worth it. I read the whole first book because I was enjoying the TV show and no, the book is not worth the effort to finish it.

Yes, Alice comes back. No, she and Quentin do not get a happily ever after.

Yes, major characters - both male and female - die.

Yes, animal characters die - Fillory's a Narnia expy, there are talking animals in martial and magical groups, things do not go well for them.

The endings of the first two books are downers. The ending of the third book is bittersweet.
