Yeah I usually love the books more when it comes to LOTR but Merry and Pippin's character arcs had a...I don't know, a kick to them in the movies that wasn't in the books. More pointed and with more momentum. Like that scene where Pippin breaks down while singing to Denethor - it causes me a certain awesome whoosh-feeling of "holy shit was this the immature cute little goofball breaking into Gandalf's fireworks at the beginning of this story???" which is a really great narrative element for these two IMO.

Agreed! That scene gets me every time.

It was a fantastic scene! I remember it gave me chills the first time I saw it when I was young. Also it was a hopeless version of a happy song from the book, which made it especially poignant.

Though I think my top favorite scene for one of the two of them is when after Merry fails to convince Treebeard to help out with the war, and tells Pippin, "The fires of Isengard will spread, and the woods of Buckland and Tuckborough will burn, and all that was once green and good in this world will be gone. There won't be a Shire anymore." Just...the development is so organic yet such a huge step up and forward since the beginning of the whole adventure.
