+1

I was pretty much a Sam girl for the first three seasons, but then seeing how he was so willing to lie to get what he wanted made me like him a lot less.

(Sure he ~felt bad~ about lying to his brother. But he kept on doing it, anyway.)

I had trouble liking him in season 4. He did make amends in season 5 and it was clear he was fighting his addiction at that point and I was able to like him again. But season 4 was rough for me. And the idea that Dean owed him anything just bothers me.

I'm weird and I liked Sam better because of those particular issues. I found the grief/addiction/assholery development interesting as character flaws. I guess I like Dean better as a "person" and Sam more as a "character."

There's nothing wrong with liking an interestingly-flawed character.

Hey, look how fans Kylo Ren or Snape have.

I think for me it was because the show didn't seem to recognize Sam's flaws as much? Dean and Sam are both flawed, but I like Dean better in part because the show acknowledges his faults, and his faults have consequences and he knows he has flaws. Whereas I don't think Sam's flaws are as acknowledged, and Sam can get self righteous about judging Dean when he makes just as many mistakes, and those are two things that often make me dislike a character.

This definitely. I find the narrative favoritism really off-putting, and it makes me (ironically) like Sam less.
