they are both tied into historical sexist assumptions about women being owned by their husbands. If she isnt' taking his name, why would she feel the need to be given away to him?

Well, I mean, traditional weddings are rather rife with these historical overtones anyway. The idea that the groom is stood up front waiting for the bride (dressed in white of course!) is downright weird when you think of it. So I don't think it's any more weird to have a parental escort of some type. I had both my parents walk me down, FWIW.
