Are you superstitious?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-11 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
And if so, what about?

Even subconsciously superstitious - like, you know it's irrational but you can't help but be worried if you see a black cat, or feel lucky if you find a heads-up penny.

Religious superstition counts!

I just got a bad fortune cookie fortune.

I didn't know they COULD be bad.

I'm nervous.

"Beware, your problem just got bigger. Think about what you've done."

I wish I were joking.

My mind says no, my fear of walking under ladders says yes.

I think there's an actual potential for danger with that one! It sounds like the kind if thing that would be against the rules at a construction site.

Me too! Honestly I think it's just common sense though, to develop the habit of never walking under ladders. Because walking under an occupied one could be dangerous, and also even an unoccupied one could fall on you.

Yes when it comes to work stuff. My industry is very luck-based, so just about everybody seems to have all sorts of lucky charms and lucky rituals and whatnot.

In regular life, not so much.

Fortune teller?

Re: Are you superstitious?

I hope ayrt is a professional fortune teller. And by professional, I mean, sits on a street corner wearing a crazy outfit and grabbing people's palms to read and such. I like to think this community takes all types.

I always feel a bit funny on full moons. Like, a little crazier, but a little happier.

I know it's bullshit but if I'm out at night and I see a full moon, it affects me.

"I'm not superstitious, but I am a little stitious." - Michael Scott

As I become older, I tend to believe in superstitions less and less, but it is hard to break out of old superstitions I have. There is always that little part of me that thinks, "Well, what if it is real?"

Like, when I run a yellow light, I kiss my fingertips and tap the roof of my car to "kiss my angel". I don't really believe that an angel is watching over me as I make bad driving decisions and saving me from collisions, but I still do it out of habit.

I can't point at the moon either, because when I was little my parents told me that our culture believes that if you point at the moon a spirit will come to you when you sleep and slice your earlobe into the shape of the moon when you had pointed at it. I don't believe it's true now that I'm grown, but I still can't force myself to point at the moon.

Honestly, I don't know. I suspect I have some religious superstitions, but the only thing I can think of is that I would avoid a house that has ghost claims attached to it. Not because I believe in ghosts, but because I don't think any ghosts are actually spirits of dead people.

However most of the commonly mentioned superstitions are things I defy. Black cats? I wanna pet them! Broken mirrors? Be careful where you step before you clean up the shards. 13? One of my favourite numbers.

However what a couple of commenters upthread said about not walking under ladders simply being good advice so you don't bump the ladder is something I have always thought would be common sense.

I always spit over my shoulder three times if I see a black cat cross the street. I just know otherwise it would bother me if I didn't, so it's basically about sushing that nagging voice in my head.

Although, I do wait someone's behind me before I spit... (jk)
