Have you considered not just softening the blow with a compliment but also wording the criticism in a way that won't make the author think it's their fault? Something like "I enjoyed blah blah blah... I did think it was strange that X did so-and-so... and maybe that bit with dog felt a bit rushed, I'd have REALLY liked to learn more about..." still sounds enthusiastic and encouraging without being abrasive.

If we're going to be doling out writing advices to people, the least we can do is flex our own writing skills and craft effective reviews.
