TW: mention of rape

(Anonymous) 2016-03-11 06:34 am (UTC)(link)
How do you even get from defending Dean's intelligence to "rape apologist"?

I mean yes, Sam's a rape victim. But that doesn't mean that nobody can ever criticize anything that he ever says ever again.

Certain Sam fans assure everyone who will give them the time of day that the one who raped Sam was Dean. Because Dean "forced" his soul back into Souless!Sam when Souless!Sam didn't want it.

(Hell, Dean is also a rape victim, and so is Castiel now thanks to season 9. Of course, the show will never adress that, given that the writers do not understand consent)

There were a lot of different issues at play during the whole re-ensoulment arc, making it kind of sticky from a consent point of view. (Did Soulless!Sam have a right to refuse? What about the rights of Sam's soul to inhabit the body which he also had claim to and, oh yeah, get out of Hell?) Dean's motives weren't exactly unmixed, and he didn't even think to ask "so, Death, could you just get Sam's soul out of there and send it directly to Heaven to hang out with Mom?"

But to compare that whole mess to rape is just so gross.

(Also, I have to wonder how the same fans felt about Sam non-consensually un-demoning Dean when he expressed his clear desire to be left alone to sing karaoke.)

Personally, I think that souless!SAm is not really a different entity from Sam (especially given the latest reveals regarding souless people) but at the same time, the second he let a vampire turn Dean just for curiosity sake (and later, we found out he was using innocents as bait for hunts) he completely lost any right he had to not get his soul back. Since he was a danger to society and since we don't ask serial killers for their consent to be jailed, Souless!Sam was did not have the right to refuse.

But as you say, nope, not rape.

And those same fans thought Sam was completely in his right to undemon Dean, because he "loved" his brother and knew what was best for Dean so Dean better be grateful for all the sacrifices Sam made. (including selling someone else's soul. That was so heroic)

Incidentally, those same fans also claim that the Gadreel fiasco (Which was a fiasco from the "Non-resucitate" orders pov) was Dean raping Sam because Sam "Forced" an angel into Sam without considering Sam's wishes. (despite Sam saying yes to Gadreel's trickery, which Dean didn't know about, and the last thing Sam told Dean was that he wanted to live)

TBH, besides rolling my eyes at the extreme Sam girls, I just wish the writers stopped writing consent issues in the episodes since they obviously CAN'T write those issues without being gross.

I guess I look at the soul thing in general terms as approximately on the level of a medical consent issue, but due to the fact that Dean was neither able or (probably) willing to keep Sam locked up for the rest of his life as an alternative, getting the soul back into him was really the only option he had left.

With regard to consent issues, I'm kind of dreading how the rest of the Amara storyline is going to play out...

Oh, I'd LOVE if there were more discussions of fandom regarding Dean's choices in the scope of medical consent issues (Because it's what they are, really, both the soul thing and the Gadreel thing), same as Sam and the demon.

But nooo... it has to be Rape.

But the Amara thing? Despite DEan saying it's against his will? Oh, no, both show and Sam fans insist is totally romantic.
