Yeah, agreed. They can just be immensely selfish, because yes, they have problems, but it wears you down and breaks your trust, and it's not surprising when things break down between people. Especially when you've already probably got dysfunctional relationships prior to the addictions issues. Those things don't go away; it just makes everything harder to sort out.
