On the one hand I agree with the others that most of the time it wouldn't be relevant to the story. Unless someone wanted to have sex with them, or they were involved in a conversation where people were discussing their sex lives or something, but I can't see where those kind of things would necessarily need to happen, depending on what kind of story you're trying to tell.

On the other hand, there are some characters I headcanon as asexual because they've never shown any interest in sex but it would kind of be nice for it to actually be confirmed, you know? I know it's not exactly the same, but it's kind of like wanting actual gay characters instead of taking characters who don't seem interested in the opposite sex and saying "ok, well, they SEEM gay, so I guess that's as good as I'm gonna get".

Anyway, I think it would be ok as long as you don't get "Tumblr-y" like you say. In a situation where it's relevant (as in, don't just have them mention it completely out of nowhere) they can say something about not liking/being interested in sex/not being attracted to people/whatever, and leave it at that. Like the person above says, 99% of characters probably wouldn't even have any idea of what asexuality is, so they can just describe how they feel (or don't feel) and be done with it.
