Re: Inuyasha

I quite liked Miroku/Sango but was largely indifferent to Inuyasha/Kagome.

I remember liking the manga's art style but not feeling like I was missing out on much by only reading it sporadically. The anime was pretty close to it, minus some of the filler. I only read to the early-twenties volume wise though.

The Kikyo vs Kagome thing was interesting at first but I feel like several other of the show's subplots, it fell into a rut after a while.

I never noticed the name thing before. I guess I was distracted by the lead's calls of "Kagome!" "Inuyasha!" "Kagome!" "Inuyasha!" I'll have to keep an eye out for that, but I think it's somewhat common to tsundere characters.

I was surprised that I liked Shippo. Normally I have low tolerance for the cute kid character.

I like Sango/Miroku too, though I have mixed feelings about their ending. I was more invested in Sando and Kohaku, since I wanted him to be redeemed and I wanted to see how he would survive once the jewel was made whole again. Sesshomaru was my favorite character, and I really loved his little band of misfits at the end (though Jaken was always annoying to me). Rin and Shippo were surprisingly likable. I couldn't stand Rini on Sailor Moon (mostly) so I agree about cute kid characters.

My thing with Kikyo vs Kagome is that Inuyasha only really commits to Kagome once Kikyo is definitively gone. So, it doesn't feel like he really chooses Kagome over Kikyo, which sucks as she chooses him over her own family. And, I kept wanting more exploration over the fact that Kagome is reincarnated Kikyo. Kikyo is always so dismissive of her, and Kagome never really seems to think about the idea. I don't know if reincarnation is different in Japan, but I thought there would be more focus on it somehow.

I didn't notice the Sango not using Miroku's name thing until Final Act came out. I watched it all on Hulu, which had an excellent sub. I wish I could get that sub on DVD (indeed, I wish whoever subbed that had subbed the rest of the show) but the official releases are on par with the older stuff. (I know I could probably download a TXT of the better sub but I have zero technological skills). Also, it's listed on TV tropes that she doesn't use his name except in important moments.

I also wonder how you feel about Naruku. I wonder if he would be more woobified if Inuyasha had come out now. I really dug the weird relationship he had with Kikyo and wanted to see it reflected with Kagome somehow.

I guess the woobification level would depend on the studio that would hypothically animate this current Inuyasha. I don't see him painted as a big woobie though.

It would be interesting to see a Naraku that blurred the line between Kagome and Kikyo like Inuyasha does. Part of fandom seems to agree with you. I searched his name to refresh myself about his character and saw a few Kagome/Naraku recs lists.

What are your thoughts on Sesshomaru? Have you seen any of the old squee posts?

I meant that fandom would woobifiy him. He's a very charismatic villain, and fandom seems to woobify villains that certainly had no woobifying traits in canon. I'm not sure if Naraku fits that mold, since I've never been a big villain-fan. But I wonder if he could be redeemed in some way. In canon, obviously not. But in fic? I think there would be some component of fandom that would like him (like they're doing for Sauron now).

I love Sesshomaru. I thought he was so awesome. I love his relationship with Rin. I didn't buy his sudden caring for Kagura. I never cared for her. But I did love the way Rin slowly opened him up. I also loved how his relationship with Inuyasha changed. I loved when he was big brother and actually protected him (or better, when he protected Kagome or one of Inuyasha's friends - I don't remember if that actually happened in canon or I just read fic about it but I love that). Even when Sesshomaru protected Jakken. He's so protective but he pretends he's not, and that's just so appealing to me. I actually ship Inuyasha/Sesshomaru a little, though Inuyasha/Koga kept rearing its head as I got further into the series.

I'd love to see more of Sesshomaru's relationship with his father, and if Sesshomaru has a residence of some sort or a territory that was his. Everything about him was so interesting. I loved how badass he was - how he could overcome and control the evil of a sword that possessed others (or was it an evil arm?). And I liked how he was pushing Inuyasha to get better by engaging him in fights. I think their fights initially were definitely real fights, but I feel like the later fights were to teach Inuyasha something he needed to know. Sesshomaru's got complicated feelings for his brother, which I think were there to some degree from the beginning but definitely grew as the series progressed. I also really like his design (except for the furry thing he wears).

Sadly, I haven't come across any old posts for Inuyasha on any subject.

I would have liked to see more about Sesshomaru's relationship with his mother and his brother's mother. Or maybe a fic with the mother's perspective. I just picture their dad being really distant and not around (like Bigby's dad in Fables.)
