Those things are awful. They are not unique to Islam. Acid disfigurement, for example, is actually a growing problem in South America (I know this from some research I did for a case). Child marriage and other awful things like genital mutilation happen in Africa. And sex slavery happens in all countries all over the world, including America. As does domestic violence and rape and the excusing of those things by society.

I guess I'm just confused as to why anyone would be concerned about Japanese comics if this is the case. Since Japan does not seem to have a problem with *actual* gendered violence as the countries you listed do.

I misunderstood and thought the thread was talking about gender issues in media. Though media issues can play into gendered violence and Japan has as much of a problem with domestic violence and rape as any other country. But no, it isn't at the bottom of the list when we're talking about all gender issues.

I mean it doesn't have the same problem some countries do, and it has worse than others, and that changes depending upon exactly what part of DV or rape we're looking at.

That some problems exist in all societies doesn't mean they're meaningfully comparable, and generally they need to be examined on their own. 'It's all the same' is easy, but almost never right.
