It was good on the character of George Kirk, George Kirk Jr., and Captain Robau. It sucked on the characters of Kirk, Spock, Sulu, Chekov, and Pike. And also Olsen, but his death was kinda hilarious. It was broadly neutral on Bones and Scotty. Uhura was the one who really got shafted in it, I mean big time. To the point that I am convinced there were two Nyota Uhuras in Starfleet and we saw the wrong one.

I think it got Kirk well but I accept that people disagree.

Spock is a genuinely complicated character so I can cut them a bit of slack here.

Sulu and Chekov, I accept, but there's always been times wheere they had a sort of trope-y secondary characterdom to them at times and I can't get too mad that the movie went down that root.

So to me, Bones, Scotty, and Kirk were decent-to-good, Sulu and Chekov were fine, and Spock and Uhura were the only ones that weren't well done. So that's not so bad overall.

DA -- To put it in the geekiest terms possible, the problem with the characterization in the reboot is that everyone's Chaotic. In the original, Bones and Scotty were the only main characters that were strongly chaotic good to start off with, so they got off the easiest in the reboot.
