A 3DS is definitely worth it imo, because it can play DS games (but no GBA ones) as well as 3DS games and virtual console games from the eshop.

But if the 3D aspect itself isn't worth it to you, you can always get a 2DS, which will play all the same games, just with no 3D ability and it doesn't fold up to make it easier to carry. The upside is that a 2DS is about $100 cheaper (I think?), and if you get screen protectors you won't have to worry about damaging your screens.
