I don't think there is anything wrong with a mother taking pictures of her baby or of a mother getting pictures taken of her with her baby. I do have somewhat of an issue with a mother seemingly using her baby as a prop in a publicity photo, so it is about the mother, not the child.

What makes the baby a prop rather than a subject? Is it that she's not looking directly at it?

I'm not a professional photographer, but usually the subject of a photo is the person or object that's central to the eye. That would be Amanda Palmer in the pic in question. Look at how it's composed. The baby doesn't even get as much focus as the machete she's holding.

But the real tip off is that it's a promotional shoot for her new single.
