I'd always felt that Alan Rickman ought to have better taste in books

Bad taste (or at least, "not fabulous taste") is implied.

I've no idea what Rickman liked or didn't like in literature, but after hearing him read this - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uAc_YuI9cLE - it's hard not to feel the OP may have a point.

I like cake better than pie. That doesn't mean pie is bad, and it doesn't even mean I dislike pie. I like it a lot, actually! Especially lemon pie. But I like cake a little better. My point is, it's not an either/or black and white thing, saying that you think X is better than Y is speaking of X and Y in relative terms.

Well, no. Think up a list of your top ten favorite movies in descending order. So if #1 is your favorite, you like it better than say, #6. Is #6 bad, then?
