True story: A decade ago, my dad was going on a gigantically long car trip with my then kid brother. To keep the kid entertained, I gave my dad a USB stick with the entire HP saga as audiobooks.

To this day, he listens to Harry Potter whenever he's taking the car somewhere more than ten minutes away.

Of course, my dad doesn't read a lot of books, and has absolutely no concept of what makes good literature; his criteria is "did I enjoy it?" And the fact is that he is a well grown man, and Harry Potter entertains him even after he's heard it all ten times before. (can't speak for Rickman's taste, though)

'his criteria is "did I enjoy it?"'

Frankly, that's *most* people's criteria. Most of us can tell if a book is just gods-awful, but subjectively, the HP books aren't *bad*, and enjoying what you're reading is kind of the point.

So kudos to your dad. :)
