[Lord of the Rings]

Well, yeah. Scary things may be freaky onscreen but they're just bad guys. It's not the same as a friendly sweet old man losing his mind and turning into that.

Also if you were a kid when you watched this and had read the Hobbit, he's a familiar heroic kids-book character too, which adds another layer of creepiness.

I remember I almost peed myself in the theater when I saw FoTR for the first time (I was 12).

But Shelob was even scarier IMO.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-17 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Me too, and I was an adult. Scarier than Shelob to me, but I'm not an arachnophobe.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-16 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, to be fair, the combination of jump scare, Ian Holm, and a sweet beloved character suddenly going completely batshit will do that.

Also, different kind of fear. Enemies are enemies, you can kill them in a fantasy world, but a family member losing their mind and having flashes where they become hateful? Different kind of fear. Not so easily solved.

And too realistic too, unlike even giant spiders <_<
elaminator: (The Hobbit: Bilbo - Going on an adventur)

Yup. (Though Shelob is still terrifying.)

[personal profile] solticisekf 2016-03-16 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
True, that.
Although to me Nazguls are scarier.

Why is this a secret?

that was terrifying

This reminds me that one of the few scenes I really liked in the Hobbit trilogy was Bilbo going apeshit on the baby spider for touching the ring.

Also, a tangent, but I really like how LoTR (both the book and the movie) treat the whole idea of the ring fucking with people's minds and how no one, no matter how good they are, can become immune just because they're THAT good and strong and brave, and in fact being strong and passionately driven to be good and do good just makes you more vulnerable to it. And being vulnerable to it isn't portrayed as a sign of being bad or weak. It takes traits that are extremely value-neutral and divorced from the good-bad axis -- apathy towards power, like the Hobbits, Faramir, and Tom Bombadil have -- to resist it. It just puts a much more interesting sideways spin on all the characters' psychology.

Coming in late, but just wanted to say this is excellent, and you got the danger of the ring absolutely right.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-16 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. Jesus. Yikes.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-17 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
IAN HOLM! I thought we'd be safe with Bilbo, old and frail and sweet, and then nope, back in Alien/From Hell territory.

The scene also played like a sudden, straight-up demonic possession out of nowhere. Which, in a sense, it was. Jump scare and spiritual horror straight out of a horror movie rather than the (mostly) fantasy LotR was happily pretending to be up to that point.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-17 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
You said it, anon.

I always close my eyes at this part

(Anonymous) 2016-03-17 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
I'm 23

(Anonymous) 2016-03-17 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
This part always pisses me off more than anything. I hate jump scares. They're so pointless. They can make me jump but then they take me right out of the story. They don't actually scare me. I find them irritating. The last thing LOTR needed was a jump scare.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-17 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Normally I would agree, but I actually liked that particular one, because it seemed like it really WOULD feel exactly like a jump scare to Frodo.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-17 12:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Even if it's justified in story, there is never a justification for a jump scare in a movie to me. Especially if it's not a horror movie. It always feels really cheap and unnecessary.

It is supposed to be scary. That's what the One Ring can do to even the nicest person. And I love it for that. But yes, that is a jump scare, which can be particularly scary because you aren't expecting it.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-17 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Are you me

As it should.

Abso-fucking-lutely. To me, it's one of the scariest points in the movie, and, like someone else upthread, I've gotten to the point where I close my eyes or look away whedn this scene comes around.
