"If X-Wings work, why change them?" Because that has what has been done for literally every thing ever.

"If eating a hunk of meat cooked over a fire on a stick works, why add spices and a pan?"

(Anonymous) 2016-03-16 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
You're comparing a cooking method to a highly sophisticated spacefaring vehicle? Are you stupid or just an asshole who can't debate?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-16 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
OH sorry, "If General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon Generation 1 is so good, why change it?"

Because that is what the military does or are you too stupid to understand that? Why the fuck do you think so much money is put into military spending? Because everyone wants the bigger gun and the fastest plane.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-16 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Given the state of the F-35b program...

(Anonymous) 2016-03-16 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Your understanding of the military and how and why so much taxpayer money goes into defense is so simplistic it's almost Trumpian.

The US military is heavily publicly funded because that's what Republicans want at the expense of other, vital programs. It gets TOO much money, actually -- especially earmarked for projects the military has deemed a failure but keep having pushed on them by Congress, like the V-22 Osprey.

The rebel forces, meanwhile, are, and have been, and will be for some time, a rag-tag group that makes do with what they've got.

Another go?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-16 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
If the rag tag group was not being funded somehow, they'd be dead. There is no way they'd be able to fight any group with even the slightest amount of military funding. It'd be like Cuba going after the US.

I guess that is another reason why Star Wars is such a stupid series.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-16 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, yes, I agree with you, SW is stupid. But it doesn't make your arguments not stupid, either.

PS: They ARE being funded, but it's nothing like a proper publicly-funded standing army.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-16 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
You do know that paramilitary funding isn't an all-or-nothing type of thing. Leaving aside that there is a much smaller gap between military and civilian technology in the Star Wars universe (as there was as recently as the 1990s on Earth, it is only in the last fifteen years that military tech has so vastly-and worryingly- outstripped civilian technology) which makes it easier for guerrillas to bridge the gap with scrappy tech and hit and run tactics. Even a beaten up piece of old shit like the Falcon can outfly and outfight Imperial tech in the original trilogy.

They can have enough funding for operations without having enough left over for research, development, production, and testing.

Also they aren't above just stealing ships to augment their forces. Which is pretty canon since we see it in the old EU and in the new EU. And I'm pretty sure the Imperial shuttle they use to fly down to Endor was likely stolen as well.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2016-03-17 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
A fair bit of the U.S. military still depends on designs that have received minor upgrades since the 1970s. (In fact, 1950s and 1960s designs are still used for logistics and transportation.)
fishnchips: (Eh)

[personal profile] fishnchips 2016-03-16 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a really dumb comparison.
But yeah, how would you have changed them (while keeping in mind that all sorts of other starfighters already exist in the Star Wars universe and the X-Wings were possibly chosen because, as I mentioned, they work and have the iconic look that (in universe) would probably inspire the biggest sense of nostalgia and connection to the old Rebellion.)

(Anonymous) 2016-03-16 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know how I would change them, I'm not an engineer. Just like if someone asked me, "How would you change the "A-10C Thunderbolt II" to improve it?"

If don't know but I bet there are some engineers and aerospace engineers who know.
fishnchips: (Heh*drop*)

[personal profile] fishnchips 2016-03-16 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Airplanes largely look the same they did 20 years ago, just bigger. They do, however, have a lot of updated tech. Who's to say the same doesn't work with X-Wings? As I said, I think there are more than enough in universe reasons to keep the general shape the same. And the new ones do look updated while retaining the iconic shape.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-16 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
OP

They shot exactly the same weapons! They didn't fly any different. Basically, JJ just inverted the colors. So disappoint.
fishnchips: (Eh)

[personal profile] fishnchips 2016-03-16 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
But... what were they supposed to shoot instead of blaster cannons and the occasional rocket? Arrows? Bullets? Pie?
How were they supposed to fly differently?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-16 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't argue with Captain Autismo, they know better than you.

I want them to shoot pie.

Since you asked

(Anonymous) 2016-03-17 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
Aerospace engineer, here. A lot of the newer fighter jets are developed for specific purposes: planes that land on aircraft carriers have to be very hardy, planes designed to be stealthy have to be designed in certain ways, and so on. Basically, a military branch will use a plane and come back with more things they want and need the plane to do and the plane will get modified until that structure can't support the wanted modifications. Then the military branch will want a new plane and come up with a list of specs, get bids, decide who is going to build it, and fund it, usually in stages, and this process takes a long time.

But here's the thing, there are still F-14s, F-15s, F-16s (all of which were introduced in the 70s) out there flying.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-17 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
My headcanon is that the X-Wing is like the SW universe version of the iPhone. It's basically the same damn thing every generation, just with a few more cosmetic/interface tweaks and maybe a slightly nicer holo-camera each time.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-17 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, the X-wing is more like a Toyota Hi-Lux. Great functionality for revolutionaries, and so close to perfect for the job it does that it needs no real changes.

It's the Kalashnikov of space fighters. Not as fast or shiny as the TIE series, but drop it in a swamp on Dagobah and it'll still fly.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-17 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I drove one of those for years. Best. Truck. Ever.
