Actually, there are surprisingly many modern cars in Cuba, mostly Chinese pirated copies of modern cars sold on the free market elsewhere. By what I saw during two weeks there this winter, I'd hazard a guess that about a quarter of Cuban cars in the cities are reasonably new (made post-2000 or so), a third are Soviet productions like Ladas from before the USSR collapsed, and three-quarters of the remainder are pre-2000 cars smuggled in through some route and the rest are the 60's American muscle cars people think of when they think Cuba. They're gorgeous on the outside and terrifying rust-bucket deathtraps on the inside.

...granted, Cuba doesn't have a lot of cars overall.
