Naw, Japan is way ahead of the US in terms of trans acceptance, at least in terms of transwomen. There's plenty of transwoman celebrities that have been around long before Caitlyn Jenner.

And the other commenter is ignorant - okama isn't a negative term, and lots of transwomen self-identify as okama. I'd say it's more acceptable to be okama than to be gay. In fact, if you're male say you like men, a lot of people will ASSUME you're okama.

Let me put it this way: you can go to okama bars in like all the major cities in Japan, and I don't see the equivalent in the US.
