I thought it was nice when I read in one of those Disney Christmas books how Mother Gothel had celebrated Christmas with Rapunzel. She was still a bad person, but I think it humanized her a little.

Or just another option for manipulation. She wouldn't work so well if she didn't show kindness and the like to Rapunzel to keep her lured in.

I think that point might work a little better if you didn't choose a picture where Rapunzel is covering her ears while looking vaguely unsettled

I hadn't heard about this, so I looked it up and...uh:

In the story, it's revealed Gothel spent every Christmas season telling scary stories and using the holiday as a way of keeping Rapunzel from the world outside the tower. According to Rapunzel, Mother Gothel would sing and chant eerie "Christmas tunes" nonstop and told tales of Nicholas; a mythical man who (as the tale goes) would creep into the rooms of children on Christmas Eve to kidnap them.

The traumatic stories would continue through Rapunzel's teenage years, and stayed with the princess even after leaving the tower, as the story focuses on Eugene attempting to subdue Rapunzel's hatred for the holiday by showing her a real Christmas.

I kind of feel like that does the opposite of humanize her. Making a child terrified of Christmas is...kind of a dick move, OP

A direct quote from the story in question is "Mother Gothel had made Christmas sound frightening on purpose. It was just another way she had tried to make Rapunzel afraid of the world outside her tower" so it sounds more like she was just manipulating Rapunzel. Or I guess it could have been both.
