Same, I knew they would let him get them back but still...

I agree, but stan is my favorite so I can't say I was too disappointed to see that he got a happy ending.

same, but I do love the headcanons cropping up that he doesn't remember everything at once. just enough to remember Dipper and Mabel and a few other things in order to brush it off as not being important and then spends nights on the Stan o War II trying to remember. hell even Ford helping him remember their shitty childhood after realising he doesn't remember everything

The part of me that loves angst is 100% on board with this, and I love that idea. At the same time, this was a powerful KIDS SHOW moment - I read some posts about how kids took the whole scene really hard. So it makes sense to me.

But it's an easy AU to play with - just say that he doesn't remember everything, or AU that he doesn't actually remember and go from there. It's like a beautiful ever-flowing spring of angst.

Well, I can't see the ending being happy if he didn't get his memories back. I get that it's an interesting interpretation but might as well explore that in fanon and have canon be all happiness and glitter imo.

It would have been too sad.

But if they gave us another season where Stan could slowly regain his memories...

IT'S. A KIDS. SHOW. They weren't going to end it on such a depressing note for kids. This wasn't a cliffhanger, it was the ending.

i agree, i wish it had at least taken them LONGER to get it back. or having to go back to the Society of the Blind Eye's hideout to get it. like there's no way the show would have left it with that angstx1000 ending (which i'm fine with) but to have it start coming back so quickly? after everyone else who had that gun used on them presumably never recovered those memories?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-19 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
to be fair everyone else who used the gun didn't want to recover their memories

I agree with you, but I found this interview with Alex Hirsch puts it in a little perspective from the creator's viewpoint:

"

AVC: Was there ever any point in the production of “Weirdmageddon 3: Take Back The Falls” where you considered keeping Grunkle Stan’s memory wiped?

AH: You can look at a finale as chance to make an impact or a statement, to shock people or shoot a big cannon and make a loud noise. To me, it’s more about a chance to give the characters that I love what I want for them personally. Some people could say, “I’d like something that’s super dramatic and miserable and made me cry and made me sad forever” [Laughs.] but that’s not my taste. The most important thing that I wanted to see in this finale was the family getting a proper goodbye. I wanted to see Grunkle Stan as himself—fully intact, not a damaged version of himself, not a lost version of himself. I wanted a Stan who knows these kids to look them in the eye, and them to look him in the eye, and say goodbye.

If I had a longer [episode running] length, I would’ve taken a bit more time with that transition of him getting his memory back. The important thing to me was to reach that ending at the bus stop where all the characters are there with each other. That to me is more important than being shocking for the sake of being shocking.
