I can understand your frustrations though.

I absolutely hate, hate, hate when parents, siblings, guardians, etc. act like everyone else has to cater to their needs/the needs of their children, younger siblings, wards, etc.

It's not the internet's job to parent your child. As long as the porn is tagged, it has more right to be on Tumblr than the 12 year old violating the terms of service. Not to mention, I feel like a 12 year old should still be monitored while online anyway, but especially in an instance like this, if you're not gonna do the very least & monitor their online activity, don't overreact & freak out about the internet acting as a safety net to pick up your slack.

Sorry. I just get really frustrated by this mentality. I think the last time I got this heated about it was when Disney redesigned Merida, giving her sparkles, to fit their Makeover Princess line & parents & babysitters were publishing think pieces about how destructive that was because it wasn't true to her character as presented in the movie. GTFO

This. If you're too lazy to put even the slightest bit of effort into monitoring your child and expect everyone else on the internet to do it instead, then you don't have my sympathy.

With the Merida thing, I don't see any problems with writing think pieces about it, or critiqueing Disney for making that choice. As the people expected to shell out money for Disney's products for their kids, they have a right to comment on those products/ ask for more variety.

But I do agree with your general point that you should either be monitoring your children, or educating them and making them aware of things they might come across when you aren't with them. And letting a kid go on the internet unmonitored and then expecting the rest of the internet to do your baby-sitting for you is truly idiotic.

No, I agree consumers are well within their rights to critique and subsequently not buy redesigned Merida merch, but so many of the think pieces I read at the time had this tone of total outrage that seemed...unnecessary for what was clearly a business decision in the name of uniformity. I recall reading one where the parent or babysitter or whomever had shown the child images of Merida as she's presented in the movie & redesigned!Merida side-by-side, and she wrote that the child called the redesigned Merida "evil."

It was all very OTT imo. Redesigning a doll & some other merch to better fit in with the general Disney Princess line doesn't change the character from the original canon and of course, nobody's forcing you to buy merch you don't like. Idk. Like I said, I got really heated about it at the time because despite having some good points, the whole discussion was overwrought with melodrama imo.
