The thing about Downton Abbey is that 1. The character development for a huge number of characters is ridiculously badly written and 2. Mary is the most massive and obvious writer's pet, so much so that she was written consistently more bitchy and terrible with each season without any real consequences. She wasn't as bad in the beginning. The weird thing is that the writer(s?) didn't even seem to be aware of how terrible she was.

Julian Fellowes writes all the episodes but there are two episodes total where there is an additional writer credited.

Ah yes, thanks! I thought I remembered Julian Fellowes being the sole writer on Downton Abbey, but I'm so used to saying "writers" because most others shows tend to have several that I wasn't sure anymore. (The fact that there was generally just one writer makes the lack of character development and the constant ret-conning of the character development that actually happened even more maddening, though.)

Now I'm wondering why there were extra writers for those episodes, both in the first season, and then never again, lol. They're not even like the first two eps.
