The change of the name was very unfortunate and didn't do it any favors. I've mostly heard good word about it now. Lots of people seem to think it was better than it gets credit for.

Yes, I didn't even realise that it was "of Mars", I thought it was some stupid action movie. I would have gone to see it, but by the time I saw people on LJ talk about it and realised what it was, it was gone from the cinema. It was a really good movie, though!

Yeah, I had no idea why they decided to call it "John Carter" instead of "John Carter of Mars." I am aware that's the title of a later book, but the "of Mars" at least gets it across that this is a sci-fi/fantasy film, as opposed to just a name as a title.

The story of the name change as I've heard it is apparently the usual corporate bullshit. In brief: the original book title was Princess of Mars. But The Princess and the Frog underperformed and apparently the wise execs decided that this must be because the all-important male audience will not see a movie with the word 'princess' in the title, and thus it was changed to 'John Carter of Mars.' But wait! Flat animated fare Mars Needs Moms also bombed, and thus the wise execs spoke again: maybe people are turned off by the word 'Mars,' and so they changed the title again to the spectacularly underwhelming and dull 'John Carter.'

Good lord, that reasoning is even more ridiculous than I expected. I don't know what I expected, though. I knew that "Princess of Mars" was probably rejected because it sounds like a girl's movie, but "John Carter" vs "John Carter of Mars"... one of those titles is much catchier than the other one. Sounds like there was mismanagement all around the marketing of this film.

Lol, this is true. Cause every time I just see "John Carter" I'm suddenly slightly hopeful there'll be a discussion of ER.
