One of the reasons I like the US version of The Ring is that the investigative reporter lady actually INVESTIGATES stuff instead of having her baby daddy have info-dump... er, psychic powers.

The Others is another good, spooky, non-gory horror film.

Well, if it makes you feel better, the book plays out like more of a mystery novel and the main character is actually a man. But it's also been a while since I read it, so I don't remember enough to confidently say more than that.

Oh, yeah, the books are very different from the movies, or at least the movies most people are familiar with.
