Re: We need more fat shaming

The HAES people fell a long way in my estimation when a FA advocate who had opted for bariatric surgery posted her story on one of the FA blogs--Kate Harding, if I remember correctly. She had made her decision because she was in constant pain, had to give up a job she loved because it hurt too much to sit at her desk, was basically bedridden and was no longer able to manage most ordinary activities of daily living. I can't even remember how much she weighed.

Most people who commented on her post praised her for her courage and wished her the best. But a handful of them were super-nasty, lecturing her about how she had made the wrong decision because she had "failed to educate herself about fatness." The comment that took the cake came from a person named (I'll never forget this) "Meowser," who declared that weight-loss surgery was like the Holocaust would have been if the Jews had been voluntarily lining up for the Zyklon B.

This was a blog on which anyone who had said something that sounded even remotely ~privileged would have been pounced on and would never have heard the end of it. Yet somehow this comment was allowed to stand without the slightest criticism or questioning, and I suspect it's because it represented a considerable enough minority viewpoint that if a mod had pointed out how utterly appalling it was, a bunch of people would have announced that they felt unsafe.

It stuck in my mind how thrilled she was about standing in line to see the current HP movie (maybe Deathly Hallows I) because shortly before that, she couldn't stand for even a few minutes without pain.
