Are they going around insisting that their headcanon must be canon or tacitly implying that it is canon, or do they just share their headcanon on their blog or whatever?

I...can understand this. That sort of thing can be really frustrating, even if logically you know that it doesn't matter how someone else views a character.

So, um. Yeah. I get you, OP. I guess I've got a bit of curmudgeon in me, too.

Headcanons are only fun if they make sense. What's the point if completely disregard canon?

To me a headcanon can't conflict with actual canon, it's only meant to fill in the gaps or ambiguities.

If it opposes canon it's an AU take on the character, which is fine. But I don't know these words have definitions to me... which clearly other people don't follow. So in conclusion, it's just me going a little nuts over something stupid.

That's exactly how I see headcanons.

this stuff drives me up a wall. i tolerate it because it's the polite thing to do, but there are so many stupid kids projecting like i-maxes onto characters and INSISTING that's how the character is meant to be. uh... no it's not, officialgoku69.

I'm pretty live-and-let-live, but I admit I find a lot of identity headcanons pretty cringey. The justifications are almost always so damned flimsy (Fenris jokes about lyrium breast tattoos with Isabela he's CLEARLY A TRANS MAN), or worse, so damned sexist (Beverly Katz is aggressive and gets shit done b/c she's secretly A MAN).

That's the same problem I have with headcanons. The vaguest, flimsiest, most off handed things are taken as OMG TOTALLY CANON GUYS! and if you don't agree, you're some form of "ist", and possibly homophobic.

I'm guessing the typewriter's there to show your curmudgeonliness, but now I'm imagining someone posting their identity!headcanons for Murder, She Wrote all over tumblr.

My headcanon is Jessica Fletcher was actually a serial killer who liked framing other people for her crimes.

Headcanon accepted. :D
