Re: Rant thread

My alcoholic mom is still making me want to punch things, but now it's because she's reached the apologetic stage and can't walk and I'm afraid she might die soon, even though last week they said she might make it a year even if she keeps drinking.

I'm hoping it's just mild dts and she'll pull through; I skipped class (for the last time; if I have to put her on a toddler leash tomorrow and take her to school I will) and dragged her to the Social Security office today. She panics at paperwork like I do, but she'd insisted she was properly enrolled in Medicare, and since we weren't getting angry billing notices I figured she must've been.

Turns out she was still covered by Cobra, and that ends this month, and she was dropped from Medicare Part B for non-payment back in January. So I renewed all her prescriptions I could, because even if she re-enrolls by the end of the month, her coverage won't start until July. And then, after getting home from the Social Security office and paying some other bills at the treasurer's downtown, in the teetering pile of paper that is her mail, I found a letter from Kaiser.

She can probably extend her Cobra another 18 months, which is more than enough time to get her back on Medicare. Except I'm afraid she might not make it through the night. I should be relieved, but I'm not. I'm terrified. And I still have to go back to school and kiss serious professor ass this week to make up for vanishing most of last week and today. Why do they even have attendance requirements? I pass my exams with flying colors and it's not like I miss class for fun. I'd much rather be taking notes at a boring lecture than lecturing my mom while pouring a bottle down the sink.

Oh, nonny, I'm so, so sorry you are dealing with this. All the internet hugs and positive thoughts for you. You sound like an amazingly strong person to be able to take care of her like this.

As a student with so much going on, can you go to your college's counseling office for help? They should be able to assist you in appeasing your profs or help you navigate the system to your best advantage. Not trying to trivialize what you are struggling with, but you cannot be the first to face major life issues while enrolled in classes. You appear to be shouldering quite a lot and a little help might go a long way in easing your burden.

As a former caretaker of a parent and a ft college student, I feel for you. I'm so sorry that you are having to struggle with this situation.
