Maybe i'm looking in the wrong places but I don't ever recall seeing a flightless dragon in western media.

I don't have a copy on hand, but I think the ice dragon in Every Other Day by Jennifer Lynn Barnes is flightless.

(That is not a rec. That book is obnoxious.)

I'm 90% sure that the dragon Prince Lir fights in The Last Unicorn (while trying to woo Amalthea) is flightless. Still fire-breathing, but I'm pretty sure it didn't have wings.

I haven't seen any. Glaurung in Tolkien is flightless. He's described as looking like a worm.

Beat me to it. There were a couple of other flightless dragons in the Silmarillion, weren't there, or am I misremembering?

I second this rec. :D

How to Train Your Dragon has a flightless dragon species called Speed Stingers.

All dragons in Norse mythology are flightless. And except for a few, they are also really small, and many live in water. And they are non-firebreathing.

The Bewilderbeasts in HTTYD2 are flightless, semi-aquatic dragons that breathe ice instead of fire.

If it helps, the novel I'm working on (and maybe one day will be lucky enough to get published) features a wide array of dragons; they're the surviving members of the story world's version of an ancient pseudosuchian/dinosaur-cousin line, and in the story's modern times they're a rather diverse group that's found in most parts of the globe. My story doesn't include any 'real world' mythology though, so I can't help on that front, but at least there's a lot of different dragon body plans? :} I've been playing around with dragon designs since I could hold a crayon to paper, it's something I love to do and I've really enjoyed the opportunity to go nuts in my story.

(There aren't any serpentine dragons like the one in your image though. Sea serpents, yes, but they're not dragons.)

That's really cool. It sounds like I'd like to read your story. I'm always up for things with lots of dragons? Are you publishing? Or posting somewhere? Can you give us links to it when it is done?

Good luck with your novel! Dragons are great and need more variety.

There's not enough dragons period. Though I prefer most common dragons, like in Dragon Heart, Eragon, D&D and Merlin bbc or even like Smaug. And I want more dragons with iridescent dragonfly wings and with soft butterfly wings.

It's not a TV show or movie but the tabletop Dungeons and Dragons games has books with all sorts of different dragons in.

The core Monster Manual has the standard Red-fire, white-cold(frost essentially), blue-lightening, etc type dragons and there are lots of other manuals with many, many other dragon types(gemstone dragons, shadow dragons, elemental dragons, demonic and celestial(holy) dragons, and even a book inspired by Eastern Asian folklore that has their own take on Oriental dragons).

(Anonymous) 2016-03-22 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I did a RPS-oneshot featuring one character as a wyvern, but that's it. XD

Different types (and new types) of dragons would be awesome though.

You'd probably enjoy How To Train Your Dragon! (more the books than the movies). There is a wide diversity of dragons in them!

(Anonymous) 2016-03-23 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
The TV show brings in a bunch of dragon variety, including flightless and ice.

The Heartstrikers books, starting with "Nice Dragons Finish Last", feature non-western dragons such as ice dragons and feathered dragons.

I'm always down for more varied dragons~

I guess I always assumed that dragons were commonly seen as varying in elemental affiliation and design, but maybe it depends on the media you're most exposed to...I certainly prefer universes where there are different body types and abilities for dragons.

The Temeraire series by Naomi Novik has all kinds of varieties--including, I believe, a Japanese flightless water dragon.

Jo Walton's Tooth and Claw has dragons that choose not to fly because of religious reasons.
