Frodo carried the ring, Sam carried Frodo. :) By your logic they should have picked some Middle Earth geek who read books all day long and played chess. Those are hobbies. Gardening is survival, man.

Maybe it could work if all four hobbits had the ring in turns so that its influence is weaker on any one of them.

Nah. Pip is accident prone and has an attraction to shiny things, but he has no more lust for power than the rest of them. He wouldn't use the Ring. Given his luck, though, he'd be captured or spotted by a Nazgul or happen to be standing right where the Eye was looking within like two seconds of taking the damn thing.
