Making new categories is, whatever. It's the social baggage - or perceived social baggage - that comes with it that is obnoxious. You can call yourself demisexual, and I don't give a fuck until you start saying that makes you different from "normal straight people", or queer, or special somehow. Making some labels is akin to me making a label for myself because I have am 5'3", or making a label for myself because I prefer to center-part my hair, or because I can't whistle. None of these things are important, and if I tried to base my identity on that - and go around telling people this is part of my identity - yeah, people are going to tell me I need to chill the fuck out.

Categories can be helpful for some people - like gay people, who use that label because it has been forced upon them, and they need support and community, as well as the ability to meet other same-gendered people for romantic reasons.

Categories become really dumb and pointless when they don't describe anything useful.
