I was just always irritated that Elrond didn't just tackle Isildur, grab the ring, and hurl it into the lava. Why just stand there as Isildur took it away? Sheesh.

Because at Mount Doom, not even Elrond could destroy the ring. Its magic, its fascination, was too strong for even him.
