Is there anything more hilarious than a modern American trying to criticize a citizen of another country on colonialism and cultural erasure? Truly it means they are so utterly lacking self-awareness to even try that.

IDEK. Personally, I get more hilarity out of looking at funny cat photos, but maybe that's just me...

(Anonymous) 2016-03-24 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
That is problematic because it implies the enslavement of animals by humans.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-24 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT. I'm okay with that.

Yes. A British person trying to do the same thing.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-24 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Or most western Europeans, for that matter.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-24 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
It's even funnier when a Brit does it.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-24 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I've found most of the English are still quite proud of colonialism and don't see the problem of it (except when America does it to them, of course). Very much White Man's Burden and duty to uplift the native is still the English mindset.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-24 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
This seems like the kind of thing a Brit would call a mealy mouthed reply, at least from what we've seen lately.

I've known Brits who actually still refer to the US unironically as "the Colonies" and then get sniffy and self-righteous if you get mad at them for it.

Double the fun if they are criticizing a country that has no colonial past.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-24 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's great because people from those countries think their country's clean record (or, "clean" record) gives them a pass at doing shitty things as individuals.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-25 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Is there any country that hasn't tried a little bit of conquest, and abuse of their fellow man, on the side somewhere? Criticizing another country's colonialism is something everyone should be very wary of doing. Stick to making your own country clean its act up first.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-24 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, when Mongolians or Russians or any country that has EVER invaded another country try to does it. So...most countries.

I feel like Antarctica is the only place with the moral high ground in this arena. Everyone else has been rolling over everyone else since ever.

You thinking they don't criticize their own country's government for it? Believe me, that kind of American is so self-loathing it's beyond hilarious.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-24 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope, not a hint of self awareness in sight. In fact totally blind to their own privilege in the area of colonialism.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-24 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
a modern American

As opposed to an archaeologically recovered one? As we talking Sleepy Hollow here, or what? ...Now envisioning Ichabod Crane expounding on "modern" issues.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-25 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
And this, children, is called the tu quoque fallacy.

In other words, if you tell a lie, and I call you a liar, I'm right. Whether or not I've lied in the past, or am lying in the present (this statement IS false, after all) have absolutely no bearing on the factual question of whether you're a liar.

Likewise, if my country has a history of cultural imperialism, that has NO BEARING on whether I'm right when I say that a different country does.

Simple enough, or should I explain it again with hand puppets?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-25 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
It matters when you set yourself up as the moral authority and fail to recognize your own failings, personal and national before setting out on your little condescending rant.

Is there anything more hilarious than a modern Muslim trying to criticize a follower of another religion on terrorism and violent misogyny? Truly it means they are so utterly lacking self-awareness to even try that.
