If you dive into Bollywood films, just keep in mind that some of the more popular ones can be over the top, but I still love them because the music is really good and/or the dance sequences that go with the music are REALLY gorgeous to watch. Also, some newer Bollywood films are a touch more realistic and don't have dance and song numbers.

One of my favorite non-Bollywood films about Indian life is Mira Nair's "Monsoon Wedding". Such a good film!! It revolves around a family in New Delhi in the middle of planning their daughter's wedding.

For some great Bollywood films that don't have musical numbers, the ones I can think of right now are:
-Mardaani: A film about a female detective who goes to find a homeless girl she and her family have kind of taken in. The young girl gets kidnapped and forced into the sex worker industry. It's a little like "Taken" but I personally liked this film more since it seemed to have taken more care with the story than "Taken" did.
-Barfi!: It's a dramedy and it's on Netflix right now! It's a really cute film, with stunning visuals. It's about a deaf and mute man named Barfi and the adventures he goes on, and his relationships with two women. I won't go into more, but it's a really cute movie and I totally got onto the Ranbir Kapoor wagon after I saw this film.
-Dum Laga Ke Haisha: Last time I checked this film was on Netflix, too, but it was a couple months ago. This film is about a man child whose parents arrange a marriage for him, and his bride is smart but she's overweight so he has a total tantrum over it. My family isn't Indian but we are South East Asian, and my older sister told me that this film perfectly captures the way Asian men are. LOL
-Queen: An small film, and I think it's on Netflix as well. This film is about a young woman whose fiance dumps her right before their wedding, and she decides to go to Europe by herself (the Europe trip was supposed to have been their honeymoon) where she learns to live life and love herself. It's hilarious, and quite touching. I think the lead actress, Kangana Ranaut, is very talented, and she was great in this film.

For traditional musicals, I could list you every other Bollywood film I've ever watched, but I'll give you key films I think you'll enjoy and shouldn't be missed if you want to get into Bollywood films:
-Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge: THE quintessential Bollywood film. It's about a young Indian woman whose family lives in London, and she goes on a trip through Europe where she meets a young man who she clashes with at first. Hijinks, young love, and a lot of great song and dance numbers ensue! You will see why Shah Rukh Khan is such a beloved actor. Not to say Kajol isn't an icon herself. This film I believed laughed the two leads into super stardom, deservedly so!
-Chandni: One of the first Bollywood films I can remember watching as a child. It has some truly amazing song and dance numbers, and though the story is a little overdramatic by today's standards, it still is a pretty good film. It's a romantic film about a young woman who falls in love with a photographer. It has a love triangle, a lot of drama, and it's probably leading lady, Sridevi's best (if not that, most iconic) role.
-Saathiya: A underrated film, one of my absolute favorites. It's a story about a young couple who meet and fall in love, and you see the trials they go through. The music is from complete legend A.R. Rahman (he did the music for "Slumdog Millionaire"), and he doesn't disappoint here. It also stars my favorite Bollywood actress, Rani Mukerji.
-Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak: Another iconic Bollywood classic. This is one of the best Bollywood Romeo and Juliet inspired films. The music is again really good, and the two leads (Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla) had great chemistry and much like "Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge" this film launched the two leads to super stardom.
-Paheli: If you want to watch a gorgeous historical romance I highly, HIGHLY, recommend this film! I can't remember if the film notes when this story takes place, but it probably is a few centuries back. A young woman is just married off, and it seems as if her new husband is more concerned about his family's business. On their way from her parents' home to their new home together with his family, a ghost becomes enchanted with the new bride. I'll leave the story at that, but I will say that I really loved this film.

I wanted to rec a bunch more films with a bunch more actors and actresses I like, but I think I've done enough. Please enjoy if you choose to watch any Bollywood films!!!
